Shira Kupperman Boehler, a New Orleans native author, was diagnosed with lung cancer after a routine MRI revealed an abnormality in her right lung. She had a more sensitive test and a more comprehensive CT scan, followed by lung surgery. Despite the diagnosis, Boehler's focus was to share her story and educate others about the possibility of developing lung cancer as a healthy, nonsmoker. She has since created a foundation to help people get preventative scans for those who can't afford the out-of-pocket costs for lung cancer screenings. Recent data from Northwestern University shows that 10% to 20% of lung cancers in the US occur in people who have never smoked. Despite this increase in never-smokers, screening guidelines in the United States remain largely tethered to smoking history. Despite her diagnosis, there is no evidence of metastasis in her life.
