Chinese brands control nearly 70% of the passenger vehicle market in China, with NEV penetration expected to exceed 54%. Foreign automakers from Volkswagen to Hyundai are partnering with Chinese AI and autonomous driving companies as they cannot develop competitive software fast enough on their own. Volkswagen reclaimed top position in the passenger car market in early 2026 with a 13.9% share, narrowly ahead of Geely at 13.8%. Meanwhile, BYD slipped to fourth place with 7.1% after six consecutive months of declining sales. Foreign brands including Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda, BMW, and Mercedes are now competing for the shrinking share that remains.
