Albuquerque leaders stand firm as DOJ challenges city’s immigration limits

The Department of Justice is suing New Mexico and Albuquerque over local and state immigration laws that limit cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Immigrant Safety Act and Albuquerque's Safer Community Places Ordinance are at the center of the case, with the federal government arguing that these policies violate federal law. Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller dismissed the lawsuit as a serious legal threat, stating that the city is ready to defend its stance. The federal government also argues that Albuquerque’s Safer Communities Ordinance discriminates against federal government and violates the Supremacy Clause, which means federal law overrides state law. The lawsuit also challenges House Bill 9, which Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed in February.
