Google’s head of Search, Liz Reid, has claimed that AI Overviews are reducing “bounce clicks” from publisher pages, a category of clicks that she believes are being reduced. This statement has been consistent with Reid's argument since her blog post in August stating that organic click volume from Google Search to websites was stable year-over-year and that “quality clicks,” visits where users don't quickly click back, had increased. However, no data has been provided to verify these claims. The Reuters Institute's Journalism and Technology Trends and Predictions 2026 report found that global publisher Google search traffic dropped by roughly a third and that Google Discover referrals fell 21% year over-year across more than 2,500 publisher websites.
