Thomas Panek, the blind CEO of Lighthouse Guild, finished the 2026 New York City Half Marathon with the first time artificial intelligence helped him navigate 13.1 miles of crowded city streets. Panek was diagnosed with vision loss at a young age and sought help at Lighthouse guild, a leading nonprofit organization providing healthcare, rehabilitation, and technology services to people with vision losses. He received his first cane and a guide dog, which restored his mobility and confidence. Panak went on to become president and CEO, where he now leads efforts to support others of all ages experiencing vision loss. While some remain skeptical of the increasing use of artificial intelligence, Panek believes it can be used for good if used thoughtfully.
