The price of natural gas is increasing, causing New Yorkers to see their home heating and electric bills rise. However, New York Gov. Hochul is attempting to roll back one of the state's key tools for lowering energy costs, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), in an effort to counterbalance President Trump's war on renewable energy. The CLCPA passed in 2019, setting targets based on science and implementing a process led by experts to meet these targets, but these recommendations have largely been ignored. The administration has been accused of failing to implement the climate law and confusing it with the cost of implementing a proposed Cap & Invest program, which is not required. The idea that the climate act is driving up energy prices is dismissed as "frenancial nonsense" by the fossil fuel industry.
