In Hawai', more young people die from suicide than from traffic crashes, cancer, or heart disease, according to the Hawaiʻi Department of Health's statistics. Suicide is the leading cause of death for youth ages 10-19, with many struggling with a lack of hope for the future. Despite decades of investment in treatment, rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide continue to rise. This article suggests a preventative approach to mental health that strengthens well-being before distress becomes a crisis. Public schools have begun incorporating social-emotional learning, but this approach varies widely from campus to campus. Current programs often lack a more in-depth approach to enhance children's social and emotional skills.
