Olympic Games-Ukraine asks IOC to examine 'neutral' status of Russian athletes
Published on April 2, 2026.
Ukraine's sports authorities have asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to examine the "neutral" status of Russian athletes accused of having links to the military or participating in events that violated Olympic sanctions. The IOC allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2026 Milan Winter Games without flags or anthems, subject to vetting. The appeal also highlighted "systematic violations" in sports climbing and its governing federation, the IFSC.
