Brandon Garrison, a Broward man, is fighting to keep his wife, Gabriela Sousa, who came to the US from Venezuela in 2023 under Humanitarian Parole, allowing her to stay in the country for two years. The couple got married before her parole expired, meaning she was officially in the United States illegally. Immigration attorney Saman Movassaghihi Gonzalez stated that marriage to a United States citizen does not give you legal rights to continue living in the US if you are not on your own. Following their wedding, a dispute resulted in Sousas being arrested for misdemeanor battery against Garrison, which was dismissed months after the wedding. If she applies for asylum and loses, she could face a ten-year penalty.
