Brazil has announced a $9 billion lifeline for the airline sector, following a 54.6% increase in the price of querosene de aviação (QAv), which has risen 64% since February. The government will provide up to R$2.5 billion per airline in FNAC-backed financing via BNDES, plus a R$1.5bn short-term credit facility with Union guarantee. The total available for Brazil’s three major carriers is R$7.5b. The package was announced by Finance Minister Dario Durigan and Ports and Airports Minister Tomé Franca. It comes after the Lula government extended a similar package to protect diesel consumers in March. The measures are part of a larger effort to prevent the Iran war's oil shock from affecting domestic connectivity.
