Stanford University's WastewaterSCAN has found that the spread of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has spread throughout Northern California, including Sacramento, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Davis, Napa, Marin, Vallejo, and Novato. HMPV is a respiratory illness that usually spreads through winter and spring seasons. It can be spread through contact with contaminated surfaces, person-to-person contact, and in the air. The first human case of HMPv was in 2001 in Holland. The virus has spread globally, with the Midwest and Northeast experiencing the highest concentration. There is no vaccine or treatment available to prevent HmpV infection.
