The California Republican Party has accused Assemblyman Carl DeMaio of ‘deceiving voters’ in a cease-and-desist letter to his political advocacy group, Reform California. The party took issue with a statewide voter guide distributed by Reform California, which used the party’s logo and called itself the “Republican Official Endorsement Guide.” The letter from CA Republican Party general counsel Ashlee Titus described the mailer as a “coordinated, brazen, and unlawful campaign to deceive California voters” and stated that it violated the state's Truth in Endorsements Law. Reform California defended its mailer, arguing that the First Amendment protects its distribution.
