The partial government shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has resulted in over a month of unpaid Transportation Security Administration officers (TSA) who have been without full pay for more than a month. Nonprofits are providing meals to D.C.-area airports after many TSA officers missed their first full paycheck due to the shutdown. The charity World Central Kitchen has provided meals to those affected by the shutdown, while Feeding San Diego has distributed 400 boxes of pasta, beans, peanut butter, and fresh produce to affected agents near the airport. Ethics rules prevent federal employees from accepting gifts related to their government position, but these restrictions can be applied directly to TSA officers. Aaron Barker, president of the AFGE Local 554 in Georgia, said TSA officer unions can accept donations and can accept them through their local labor council. Operation Food Search is working with TSA to safely deliver food and set up a temporary pantry at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
