As winter fades, a biking trail ends on Alaska’s western coast

The author and her partner, Forest Wagner, were stranded in a cabin under Old Woman Mountain in Unalakleet, Alaska, after winter ended and they were unable to pedal 34 miles into the village on the Bering Sea. The cabin was built and overseen by people with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and was all they could do when their bikes became unviable due to the lack of movement on the 90-mile portage trail from Kaltag. The pair had to fly home from Unalakaleet home to Fairbanks after falling a few hundred trail miles short of their goal of reaching Nome.
