A report from the National Hurricane Center has revealed that for the first time, AI-based models were used in real-time hurricane forecasting, outperforming traditional models. The Google DeepMind model outperformed National Hurricane Centre's official forecasts up to three days out. This success could signal a significant shift in how hurricanes are forecasted in the future. Hurricane track forecasts were generally accurate in 2025, with forecast errors lower than average at every time range. However, the N.Hurricane Center performed well overall, with its intensity forecasts remaining the best through 60 hours.
