Lawyers for Cook County State’s Attorney, Eileen O’Neill Burke, have accused her of having a “political alliance” with federal law enforcement, hindering her office from investigating alleged wrongdoing by federal agents during Operation Midway Blitz. The petition was filed in March in Cook County Circuit Court asking for a special prosecutor to potentially prosecute immigration agents for their actions during the operation. Lawyers for the civil rights firm Loevy &Loevy drew comparisons to the appointment of special prosecutor who won a murder conviction against former Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. However, representatives for the state's attorney's office opposed the petition, arguing that they are required to follow the law even when it's unpopular. A ruling on the issue will be made next month.
