Faulty AI Leads to Record $10,000 Fine for Oregon Lawyer

A Salem-based civil attorney, Bill Ghiorso, has been fined a record $10,000 for submitting an AI-generated legal brief that was found to contain 15 false citations and nine quotes that the state Court of Appeals found were "contrived from thin air". Despite Ghorso claiming he didn't intentionally dupe the court, the court found that he had made a fundamental error by relaying on a paralegal's faulty research. The fine, which could have topped $16,500, was limited to $10.05. This is not the first time the state appeals court has fined a civil attorney for submitting error-riddled briefs written by artificial intelligence.
