The cost of cleaning up toxic coal ash is increasing, according to the Sierra Club, which sued Georgia Power years ago to have shareholders, not customers, responsible for the costs of coal ash cleanup. The group argues that it has been the company's decision to continue burning coal instead of switching to cleaner fuel. The legal challenge was dismissed by the Georgia Supreme Court in 2022, and there will be no further scrutiny of the costs until 2028. The company had previously planned to shut down roughly all of its remaining coal plants but has since reconsidered its decision due to increased electricity demand.
