NYC should use our plan & close Rikers

The Independent Rikers Commission has released a data-driven Blueprint to close Rikers Island, which Mayor Mamdani's administration must implement by May 1. The commission includes representatives from Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards and Borough-Based Jails Czar Dana Kaplan, who have been appointed to improve safety and outcomes. The recent opening of secure treatment beds at Bellevue Hospital demonstrates this leadership. Rikers holds more people with serious mental illness than any psychiatric hospital in America, and 85% of the population being held pretrial, causing the population to be artificially inflated. If we reasonably speed up cases, up to 2,000 fewer people will be in jail on a given day, there will be zero harm to public safety.
