The series finale of "DTF St. Louis" ended with the death of Missouri ASL interpreter Floyd Smernitch (David Harbour), who was found dead after drinking a poisoned Bloody Mary. The show's creator, Steven Conrad, revealed that the show's central love triangle involved local weatherman Clark Forrest (Jason Bateman), Floyd's best friend, Floyd's wife Carol (Linda Cardellini), and even Floyd's stepson Richard (Arlan Ruf), a socially awkward pre-teen with a history of violent outbursts. Despite this, Conrad expressed a deep and profound understanding of the show about loneliness and disappointment of midlife and not liking what you find, and its final episode focused on the relationship between Clark Forrest and Floyd. Conrad also commented on the show’s final scene, which included a final scene with Richard Jenkins and Joy Sunday.
