Scientists from Mansoura University in Egypt have discovered the last common ancestor of modern humans and apes, Masripithecus moghraensis, which may have been the last ancient hominoid to arise before modern apes. The discovery raises questions about when and where hominoids actually diverged, with fossils of Masrias being mostly found in East Africa. The lower jaw of Masripithcus was recently discovered in what is now the Wadi Moghra region of northern Egypt, filling a gap in the evolution of stem hominods. This discovery could lead to further investigations into the origins of modern apes beyond East Africa and North Africa.
