The Artemis II mission, the first crewed journey toward the moon in over 50 years, will take astronauts farther from Earth than any humans have ever been before. The mission will test systems and hardware for a future lunar landing and a potential moon base. The astronauts, including the first woman, Black man, and the first Canadian to travel to the moon, will be the first to see the far side of the moon. The Orion capsule is scheduled to return to Earth for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. The multibillion-dollar Artemis campaign aims to establish a moon base near the lunar south pole before the first Mars missions.
