America must take the path of peace

In these days of a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, many Americans are left wondering what will their nation choose between political action and peace. The conflict has already resulted in a tragic toll on combatants and civilians, threatening global stability and highlighting the grim reality of war. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, reminded us that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a just political order. The Church does not aim to wield power but to remind nations of the higher law written on the human heart. The tension between Pope Leo XIV and President Trump has heightened the urgency of this moment, particularly in light of public rhetoric that can inflame rather than illuminate. If we reduce even the Holy Father's appeals to peace into categories of political advantage or opposition, we risk losing sight of what is truly at stake. The Archbishop of Baltimore has urged American Catholics and all good will to reflect on the revolutionary truth that every human person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
