Scientists from institutions across the US have developed a "universal" vaccine, which protects mice against viruses, bacteria, and even allergies. The new GLA-3M-052-LS+OVA vaccine can be delivered as a nasal spray and can also accelerate mice's immune response to SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses. It also protected mice against bacterial infections, including Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter baumannii. The vaccine also reduced the viral load in their lungs 700-fold compared to unvaccinated mice. The next steps are human trials, with the team hoping this type of universal vaccine could be available within five to seven years.
