Hawaii’s tourism sector suffers over $300 million loss from storms

In March, Hawaii's tourism sector suffered a significant loss due to back-to-back Kona low storm systems, which resulted in over $300 million in total loss. The severe weather prompted trip cancellations and resulted in approximately $14 million in hotel revenue loss. However, businesses across the state have seen the economic impact of losing Spring Break travelers. James Kunane Tokioka, Director of the State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, said that a grant program for impacted businesses will be available soon with federal funds approved. The remaining $400 million will be distributed to the City and County of Oahu, with $100 million going to Maui and Hawaii Island to help small businesses.
