The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has confirmed that it is working with the City Attorney's Office to investigate the data breach, which reportedly involved the group World Leaks. The leak reportedly spanned 7.7 terabytes of information and over 337,000 downloadable files, including discovery materials from previous cases. The group, known for extorting compromised organizations for ransom payments, targets companies in key sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, technology, consumer services, and energy. Cybersecurity company Halcyon described World Leak as a high-threat group known for its aggressive tactics and infiltration of data through VPN credentials. It is unclear whether the group ever demanded a ransom payment or if the LAPD ultimately paid one. There are simple steps companies can take to protect against similar attacks.
