Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association are in a disagreement over core economics proposals for the 2026 season, which could result in a work stoppage due to the expiration of the current collective bargaining agreement on Dec. 1. The disagreement stems from Major League Baseball's insistence on a salary cap system, while the MLBPA prefers maintaining the current system. The league has no plans to negotiate in the uncapped system the union wants, and the union has no intention to engage the league on the capped system. A potential compromise is likely to be reached by early March, when the potential loss of billions of dollars in revenue for owners and salaries for players becomes a reality. Despite this, each day that passes without progress draws baseball closer to a potential threat to shut down the sport.
