A report by the Department of Corrections in New Jersey has revealed that illicit drugs have become rampant in state lockups, with staff administering the overdose-reversing drug Narcan more than once a day. The report stated that Narcan was used in 406 separate incidents in the 2025 fiscal year, and 544 times the previous year. Twenty-two people died of overdoses or "drug-related accidents" between 2018 and 2024. Narcan is typically used when someone is found unresponsive and does not work on non-opioid substances like K2 or xylazine. However, critics argue that this number of Narcan administrations raises urgent questions about the increasing amount of drugs making their way into prisons.
