U.S. Sen. Jon Husted has introduced bipartisan legislation, Sammy's Law, which would require major social media companies to open their platforms to third-party safety software. The bill would provide parents with real-time alerts when their children encounter dangerous content or interactions online. It is part of Husted's efforts to control social media firms that are being used to exploit children. It would require social media platforms with over 100 million monthly active users or over $1 billion in annual revenue to create technical connections to safety software providers registered with the Federal Trade Commission. Third-party providers would be barred from selling any user data they collect and would be required to delete it within five days of receiving it.
