Republican Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves is planning a special legislative session to redraw judicial district boundaries after the US Supreme Court rules on a case that could potentially reshape electoral maps nationwide. The case involves a challenge to Louisiana's 2024 congressional map, which opponents argue is an unconstitutional racial gerrymander over a newly created second majority-Black district. Reeves stated that federal law requires that the Mississippi Legislature should have the first opportunity to draw these maps due to the pending Callais decision. The announcement comes after lawmakers declined to address redistricting during the regular 90-day session. If lawmakers fail to act after the ruling, the court could draw new lines and order special elections.
