University of Michigan’s president-elect diagnosed with brain cancer

The University of Michigan's President-elect, Kent Syverud, has been diagnosed with brain cancer and will not be able to serve as the university's next president. Mark J. Bernstein, chair of the Board of Regents, announced the news in a video on April 15, 2026. Although he will not serve as president, SyverUD plans to continue contributing as a professor in the Law School and as a special advisor to the Board. Domenico Grasso will continue serving as president. The search process for a new president will begin soon.
