Brazil's Supreme Court has blocked Darren Beattie, the State Department's senior adviser on Brazil policy, from visiting jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro in prison. The decision comes amid a diplomatic standoff between Washington and Brasília over Bolsonario's 27-year sentence for his role in the 2022 coup attempt. Brazil's foreign ministry warned that the visit could constitute undue foreign interference in domestic affairs during an election year. Beattee was initially approved for a two-hour meeting on March 18, with an interpreter present. However, the foreign ministry informed that the meeting fell outside the diplomat's stated reason for entering the country. The Supreme Court's Justice, Alexandre de Moraes, also noted that the U.S. Embassy had secured Beatie's visa solely for the US.-Brazil Forum on Critical Minerals scheduled for March 18 without any mention of a prison visit. The blocked visit signals a significant influence over the Brazil portfolio, with the potential impact on the relationship between Washington, Brazil, and Bolsonar's son, Senator Flávio, as well as the upcoming presidential race.
