Tennessee lawmakers are pushing for a statewide safety plan for the state's parks following the killing of Dr. Alyssa Lokits on a Nashville greenway in 2024. The proposed Ayshancele Lokits Safety Act would require the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) to develop a comprehensive strategy for park design, lighting, maintenance, signage, surveillance, programming and public involvement. If passed, it would benefit 59 state parks and over 500 local parks across the state. The bill is set to be heard before the Senate Energy, Agriculture and Natural Resources committee.
