In 2020, North Carolina experienced the most powerful earthquake in over 100 years, with a 5.1 magnitude earthquake near Sparta in Alleghany County, bringing back memories of the 2011 earthquake that shook the state. The earthquake was felt as far north as New York City and as far west as Ohio. The most damaging earthquakes in North Carolina were recorded since 1735, according to the Earthquake History of North Carolina, presented by Dr. Kenneth B. Taylor. The state has also had several notable quakes, including the Skyland earthquake of 1916, which was felt throughout North Carolina. This is the most recent 'damaging' earthquake North Carolina has seen.
