New Ashley Elementary School, formerly Ashley Academy, is set to begin construction in Winston-Salem after a decade of concerns about mold and air quality on campus. The cost of designing a new school was included in a multimillion-dollar bond in 2016, but not a building replacement or other related costs was included, leading to a federal lawsuit alleging racial discrimination. Concerns were raised following the omission, which led to a significant reduction in academic space, food pantry, and clothes closet usage. The project will break ground by December 2026 and take 18 months to complete. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners has set aside bond dollars for the project, and the district expects lottery revenue to supplement it.
