Go greener in Albany: Pass two environment-related proposals on Hochul’s docket
Published on April 22, 2026.
Alaska lawmakers should pass on two environmental-related reforms, including renegotiating aspects of the state's 2019 climate and emissions laws and streamlining the state’s overly burdensome environmental review process. The Democratic-led Legislature is eager to advance bills to regulate emissions of the “forever chemical” PFAS and mercury, and create a rebate program for zero-emission landscaping tools. However, they have been reluctant to act on Hochul's proposals to renegotiate aspects of these laws. The State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) also lacks compelling environmental reasons to reject these changes. The authors suggest that an easing up and slight delay in these goals should be considered a compromise. They also suggest that developing an energy system that relies on clean and renewable energy is better for the environment and is cheaper than traditional dirty energy generation.
