Public employing records requests for government accountability

Niki Kelly, editor of the Indiana Capital Chronicle, has reviewed dozens of transparency complaints to the Indiana Office of the Public Access Counselor during Sunshine Week, a national initiative that emphasizes the importance of open government. The complaints included requests for public records, police records, zoning board minutes, and water usage for a data center. Some exemptions included attorney-client privilege, deliberative materials and trade secrets. However, when requested records are not provided, citizens can file a complaint with the public access Counselor, who issues an opinion. While there are no fines for the government, a person can win attorney's fees.
