The Stakes of the Next UK General Election
Published on May 2, 2026.
The UK's future is uncertain, with the next general election set to take place between now and August 2029. The issue of immigration, welfare dependency, deindustrialization, and public indebtedness are all significant issues facing Britain. Immigration is the top issue, with Britons more likely to identify it as their nation's leading issue. The rates of legal and illegal migration are becoming unsustainable, with around 50,000 migrants entering the UK each year on small boats via the English Channel and many often housed at taxpayers' expense. The cost of legal migration is estimated to be £234 billion over the lifetime of these migrants. Prime Minister Kemer is planning to restrict rules on entitlements for newcomers to access public benefits. The Green Party is proposing to replace these benefits with those of its own MPs and a resurgent faction of Reform UK or the Conservatives. The welfare state has also been under strain, with a sharp rise in incapacity claimants.
