Law professor and Instapundit blogger Glenn Reynolds has warned that NASA is "flirting with disaster" due to the flawed Space Launch System and Orion space capsule's heat shield problems. This comes as the flight of the Artemis II is set to take place. The issue arose when then-President Barack Obama was presented with the results of the Second Augustine Commission report, which suggested two possible scenarios for a revamped deep space program: "Moon first," or "Flexible Path," which would bypass the moon and eventually send astronauts to Mars. However, if Obama had taken a different tack, he might have invited congressional leaders for a White House meeting to discuss future NASA space policy. The architecture for deep space exploration would have been designed and developed by engineers, not by members of Congress, a significant improvement over what NASA is dealing with now. The SpaceX Crewed Dragon may have started flying to and from the International Space Station years earlier, reducing reliance on Russia. The revised Constellation 2.0, in exchange for commercial crew, both properly funded, could have been a deal made in heaven. The ability to talk to Congress and administrator and deputy administrator of NASA could have improved the governance of programs and make better choices.
