A new bill in Minnesota aims to ban the use of paraquat, a herbicide linked to Parkinson's disease, which can cause tremors, instability, rigid or slow movements, and cognitive effects like depression. The bill, sponsored by DFL state Rep. Brad Tabke, would add Minnesota to a list of at least 13 other states considering similar legislation. Paraquat is used to remove cover crops on farms and is linked to the disease by research. The state Department of Agriculture has not yet taken a formal position on the bill. However, some agricultural organizations argue that paraquats is an important tool for farmers implementing soil-saving practices like cover crops.
