The US Supreme Court has ruled that parents challenging California's school gender identity policies can enforce a lower court injunction that restricts student confidentiality while the case continues on appeal. The court vacated a Ninth Circuit order that had blocked a district court ruling against California officials, including Attorney General Rob Bonta. The case centers on California guidance that prevents school staff from telling parents if a student socially transitions at school, meaning they are adopting a different name or pronouns, without the student’s consent. Critics have labelled these policies as “forced outing” and argue they protect students who may face rejection, abuse, or homelessness if their gender identity were disclosed to unsupportive families. The ruling was criticized by Justice Elena Kagan, who accused the court of relying on a "regular order" to establish parental rights.
