Elizabeth Rees-Gilbert, a 35-year-old runner from Cannock, Staffordshire, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at four months old and was given a poor prognosis when she was diagnosed. Doctors at Birmingham Children's Hospital decided to perform a ground-breaking clinical trial to treat her nervous system, using a drug called Doxorubicin. The drugs worked, but left her immune system weak and she eventually contracted pneumonia. Despite being under hospital care until aged 16, Rees is still monitored by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the city. She plans to participate in the AJ Bell Great Birmingham Run on 3 May.
