The federal government is working to restore the 54-mile Potomac Interceptor wastewater line, which once contained 243 million gallons of sewage flowing into the Potomic River. The bypass system prevented nearly two billion gallons of the total amount of sewage from reaching the river. The National Park Service and Army Corps have been assisting in cleaning up the contaminated soil along the C&O Canal. The EPA will continue testing water quality near the collapse site and will take over testing from the DC Department of Energy and Environment. However, the capital improvement projects to fix the entire 54-m stretch of sewer line will take years.
