Giselle Burgess, a community development specialist for Girl Scouts of Greater New York, started a Girl Scout troop for girls experiencing homelessness in the New York City shelter system almost a decade ago. The troop, Troop 6000, has served in 20 different shelters across all five boroughs and aims to empower girls who are experiencing homelessness and living in temporary shelters. The organization has also incorporated immigrant families and asylum seekers into the fold. The Girl Scout curriculum is translated into multiple languages and bilingual staff, teaching girls how to navigate city-specific programming and navigate the subway. The Troop 6 also teaches budding leaders about entrepreneurship and social skills. The funds raised by purchasing cookies from the troop can be donated at their in-person pop-up at the Girl Scout store.
