Kayaker Who Died After Potomac River Rescue Identified As VA Man

Police responded to a reported drowning in the Potomac River near Great Falls, Maryland, around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. Three male kayakers had been navigating rapids when one of them, William Caulfield Lankford, became separated from the group and was found struggling in the rapids. The other two men freed Lankford and began CPR before Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel took over life-saving efforts. The investigation into the death is ongoing and Maryland Natural Resources Police has issued several water safety reminders for people paddling in whitewater conditions.
