A 76-year-old man, Gilbert Smalls, shot dead his 21 year old neighbor, Justin Chatfield, as he tried to quell an argument in their Bronx apartment building. The incident occurred at about 10:20 p.m. on the same night as Chatfield was shot in the chest by his neighbor, who is about 55 years his senior. The shooting was one of two back-to-back shootings in the Bronx, which police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said was leading the city in crime reduction this year. The Bronx, the fourth largest borough in the city by population, accounted for about 40% of the city's murders through the end of the year. Despite a 10% jump in crime investigations in 2025, no arrests have been made.
