The media layoffs across the entertainment industry, including Paramount, Warner Bros Discovery, CNN, and Disney, are impacting the industry following several factors such as the Covid-19 pandemic, dual Hollywood strikes, and a series of wildfires in Los Angeles in 2025. Disney is set to cut nearly 1,000 employees in its first round of cuts under CEO Josh D'Amaro, with the cuts expected to be across the marketing and brand organization departments. Sony Pictures Entertainment laid off around 12,000 global staff in early April, largely in the junior and middle management realm. The layoffs were targeted and strategic, not just cost-cutting. Sony's podcast group, Spotify Studios, had 15 employees, or 3% of the network’s headcount, affected, mostly at The Ringer and Spotify Studios. The Washington Post began making cuts to a third of its staff in February, affecting both newsroom and business side, and Amazon cut another 16,000 workers at the end of January 2026. Meanwhile, Disney announced plans to close CBS News Radio as part of its news division following another round of layoffs. The potential merger of Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix is also on the rise.
