The seven candidates for California governor, including Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra, held a CNN debate on Tuesday in East Los Angeles. The candidates were asked about their plans to save Hollywood, as the industry struggles with a production flight to other states and countries. Some of the candidates have proposed plans for unlimited tax credits for film and TV productions, rather than the $750 million currently allocated for such productions. Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called this an “existential election for Hollywood” while former Rep. Katie Porter also supported such open ended credits. The top two finishers in the June primary will go on to the November election regardless of party. The debate was the largest exposure yet for the gubernatorial field and was attended by a national audience.
