Gun tax breaks, wildlife money, hunter education all now on Tennessee lawmakers' minds
Published on March 10, 2026.
Several bills affecting Tennessee's fish and wildlife, water resources, outdoor access, and conservation policy are moving through committees in both the House and Senate. The Tennessee Wildlife Federation is monitoring important bills through the legislative session. Last week, legislation proposed creating a dedicated funding source for fish and animal resources was advanced out of the Senate Agriculture Committee. While this progress is encouraging, there is still a long way to go as the proposal continues to pass through additional committees and votes in both chambers. Other important bills include a bill to clarify that the regulation of lawful hunting methods is handled at the state level rather than by local governments. A bill has been filed to allow local education agencies and public charter schools to offer state-approved hunter education courses to students in grades five through twelve.
