The islands of the Geiyo archipelago have been largely overlooked until 1999, when the Shimanami Kaido highway opened connecting Japan’s main island of Honshu to the island of Shikoku. The path has since evolved to become Japan's most popular long-distance cycling route. The islands' cultural attractions, diverse dining experiences, and the addition of several high-end lodging options have allowed them to offer a wide range of experiences. Omishima Island, home to several of the route's most iconic sites, is particularly noted for its lived-in communities. Other notable attractions include the Toyo Ito Museum of Architecture and the Oyamazum Shrine.
